I am back on the road again. Today's hike is from Foncebadon where we took a rest day yesterday to Villafranca del Bierzo, a 24km day which shouldn't be too difficult since its fairly flat with only a couple of moderate climbs, and it should be beautiful as the road takes you through the local vineyards. You can't go wrong with wine along the Camino.
The feet got bound up this morning so that I could walk. It doesn't look pretty, but taping the feet does help against new blisters and somewhat makes the old ones not as painful to walk on, although after about 15-20km, you do feel your feet hurt.
On the way to our destination today, we passed a local wine bottling and distribution center where we couldn't help ourself lives and had to stop for a tasting, and further along the way, we ran into a little wine bar / cafe where the owner sell the wines that makes. The place was adorable, the owner - Carlos - was an extremely kind and nice man, and the wine was delicious. Because it was not today (low 80s by the early afternoon), we opted for the white wine instead of the usual Vino Tinto (red).
I forgot to mention. I have a new walking buddy. He is my new Camino travel buddy and his name is Cacabelo. He was made by a local hippy that was hanging out along the path making Camino trinkets out of leather.
One last thing I have to mention, for dinner today, I decided to order the local specialty called Botillo del Bierzo. I was told it was a meet dish, however due to my lack of Spanish and the waitress' lack of English, she could not explain to me what kind of meet. When I got the dish, and cut into it, here is what I saw. You can imagine how my appetite went right out the window for the remaining for the meal. I think tonight I'm going to stick to wine and cherries.
I learned at the end that this was a pigs toe.
Tomorrow we climb a mountain again to O'Cibriero. It's supposed to be 32km long. I plan on shipping my backpack to the village so that I don't have to carry it. Hopefully the lack of the additional weight will allow me to complete the treacherous day.
Stay tuned.
